can you test a regulator if you have it in your hand? not in the car

If you rev it fast and not slow is it normal for the voltage to spike really fast then drop down? if I rev mine quickly it goes to high 15. something to low 16. something but quickly drops back down to high 13. something low 14. something.

wow such an easy answer for such a complex problem. Alternator output depends on a few other issues. There are fuses, fused cables, the computer…………

Could a bad voltage regulator cause temp/gas gauge to malfunction I.e. stay stuck on high or low temp or full/empty tank. Or cause the dash gauge icons to come on and off???

Superb clip. My m.meter is showing 15.5 – 16.4 and my headlights are flashing, loss of power steering, dash lights are flashing on and off……. Nightmare.

What if the voltage at idle goes from 14 volts to 12.5 and back roughly every 25 to 30 seconds. Can that be the voltage regulator or something else? This is on a 2001 s10 blazer with the 4.3 vortec engine.
