Capacitors discharge much more quickly, sometimes in fractions of a second, as they have extremely low internal resistance. Batteries can hold significantly more charge and release it much more slowly. They're also physically completely different: Caps use conductive plates separated by a dielectric. Applying voltage across the conductive foil creates an electric field across the dielectric, causing + and – charges on the plates. Batteries use mixtures of chemicals to create an electric charge.

But I think this is the best explanation you can give to someone that doesn't have any kind of knowledge in these areas.
By implying that a capacitor is essentially a battery you also imply that they behave the same. Nothing is farther from the truth, a battery is a Voltage source where as a capacitor is seen as a device to store charge, and can also be used implicitly as resistance in an AC circuit. The best information you could give someone is the actual application of a capacitor, which I just explained to you.
