The VW bugs were tough little cars- the 914s were too tight to work on easily but not bad cars overall. Clutch cables wore out because they ran over a pulley. Heater flaps broke but not too bad to fix. The Audis had a 4 cylinder water cooled engine with front wheel drive . Poorly made and tended to overheat. The main problem with all VW bugs was the air cooled engine. Couldn't get that many miles from them. But you could swap an engine in maybe 2 hours. Wouldn't push air do conditioner for long.
Yeah, NEVER buy a first year of a car model when they've made MAJOR changes. Always better to wait a year or 2 and let other people test them for you.
New or rebuilt Fuel injectors & a new 02 sensor. The Ford MPG will improve.
