Old Passat was built like a tank it was really popular from 1984 to 1989 in my country Iraq it was the German equivalent of Corolla and the funny thing it was made in Brazil
07 was the first year of the 6.4 Ford diesel, an absolutely abysmal engine. The 6.0 ford has a poor reputation as well however for less money you can purchase one that's in good shape and do a few things to make it a superb engine. Look up 6.0 "bulletproofing".

Just live with your bad Volvo transmission problem till it falls apart.
Comedy 🎭 they have been junk for 20 years. Last good vw was made in 1993 -1994 respectively

Regarding the 1987 Toyota Corolla that sold for $16K in England; let's not forget that in the UK they have MoT inspections, and anything that can pass inspection is worth a lot. If you watched Top Gear, they bought cheap exotic cars for their challenges, but often the cars would fail MoT (Ministry of Transport) inspection. They never told the viewers how much was spent getting the car sorted to pass.
The jetta is better than the passat in my opinion. Much cheaper and lighter on fuel. But just as much of a junk.
