Appreciate your time
Great topic, thanks for this video, Eric!
I wanna add that muggles look at technicians and mechanics like they're trying to rip them off because that's been their experience so far OR they know many people that were ripped off. I've had mostly bad experiences, both with stealerships and independent mechanics, and the one that really hurt me was when I was ripped off by someone I thought was a good friend. Now, being taken for a fool by an old friend made me start to buy tools and work on my car myself, with varying degrees of success. Thankfully, with the help of fine people such as yourself on youtube, I never made a problem worse lol.
I don't know what it is about this business, though… I like working on cars, hours just fly by, so that's why I think it would be a good profession. However, why are there so many douchebags in the business? Were they douchebags before or did they become that in order to survive? Or is it like a mix? I don't know.
My former friend became my friend before I even had a car and he didn't seem like he was the kind of person to pull something like that on anyone, let alone a friend. He never admitted to any wrong doing, too.
I'm sure this will be a timeless conversation. And my take is this. If you love cars, then yes. I'm sure it isn't for everyone. And with that so long as you enjoy the people (customers), and the cars you win twice. That said, those few customers that aren't that great, and or simply don't get it and appreciate let alone understand the intricacies and complications trouble shooting entails no worries. They wont rule your base business and clientele. And those that do will provide a more rewarding experience in time. For me I drive approx. 30 miles to my auto shop and will tow a car there if need be. They've provided the good service and treated me fairly from the start! And I honestly feel bad when occasionally my cars act like ill tempered teenagers and act up…. It happens….SSSSHHHHHH!!!!!
I've been thinking about it. Glad you talked me out of it.
Thank you for the wisdom!
im a rookie real new and i got offered an apprenticeship for this successful mechanic i got three days to start will i learn from hos training , He's been a mechanic since 1989 ?
is it that bad working as a mechanic ? Maybe i should think about it.
R.V.'s Mechanic?
Very different way of running workshops between the US and Europe. When you work at a dealership, why do you have to bring your own tools. On Europe the workshop is providing the tools. Your employer is providing the equipment you need to perform your job. Just like an IT company is providing a computer to their employees.
I am just getting started in the auto tech business and I plan on doing it as a side hustle while keeping my full-time job in an unrelated field because it seems like full-time automotive technicians get worked to death while the shop owner/dealership makes all the big money and if you open your own shop you'll have to hire at least 5 technician to pump out good profits
