Nordhoff, though, was impressed with what would become the Audi 100, a mid-size, front-wheel drive sedan powered by a four-stroke, inline-four, and immediately pushed the new car into production in 1968.
It was an instant hit, and just three years later, total production of the Audi 100 passed the 500,000 mark. Ironically, the new Audi was so successful that with demand easily outstripping supply, Volkswagen was forced to add another production line, this time at VW’s home base in Wolfsburg.
