Police in Victoria have impounded an old Mitsubishi sedan after it was detected at 159km/h – and issued the driver a handful of fines worth more than the car.

Victoria Police highway patrol officers have intercepted an old Mitsubishi 380 sedan after it was detected travelling at 159km/h in a 100km/h zone – in the hands of an unlicenced, first-time driver.

The vehicle was stopped on the Goulburn Valley Highway, north of Shepparton in central Victoria last week.

The 21-year-old female driver – travelling with a male passenger – reportedly told police it was her first time behind the wheel of a car and was deemed to have never held a licence.

The car was impounded police at a cost of $1375. This fee, in addition to the speeding fine and tickets for other traffic-related offences, is expected to eclipse $3000, said to be more than the car is worth.

Although police described the vehicle as a Mitsubishi Magna 380, the company dropped the Magna name – and simply called it a ‘380’, a nod to its 3.8-litre V6 engine – when it was manufactured locally from 2005 to 2008.

A statement from Victoria Police said the driver is “expected to be charged on summons with unlicensed driving, exceed speed and other traffic related offences.”
