European off-road start-up Ineos – the creator of old-school Land Rover Defender clone – says its new small electric four-wheel-drive will be tough enough to tackle the famous Schöckl Mountains in Austria.

European off-road start-up Ineos Automotive has revealed more information about its next new model – a small electric four-wheel-drive – and that it is due to go into production in 2026.

Joining the upcoming Grenadier wagon and Grenadier ute, the company claims the yet-to-be-named Ineos electric vehicle will have enough off-road capability to take on the renowned Schöckl Mountains of Graz, Austria.

The Schöckl Mountains have been used for testing and promotion of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class over the years, which is engineered and built nearby in Austria by third-party manufacturer Magna Steyr.

While the Grenadier is engineered by Magna Steyr but built in Hambach, France, the new electric Ineos four-wheel drive will be engineered and built by Magna Steyr.

Grenadier has announced production of the small electric off-roader is due to commence in 2026.

The promise of genuine off-road capability –if that comes to fruition – will place the electric Ineos among a small field of competitors.

While there are some examples of electric off-roaders from Ford, Rivian and Hummer in the United States, the Australian market is yet to receive a highly off-road capable electric vehicle direct from a major automotive manufacturer.

The Mercedes-Benz EQG – an electric powered G-Class – is due to arrive in Australia in 2024. Land Rover also has an electric Defender in the works, and Jeep is also working on it’s own electric off-road future.
