BMW’s facelifted BMW X5 M and X6 M Competition SUVs have been upgraded with new technology, styling and power – alongside a $14,000 price increase.

The facelifted 2024 BMW X5 M and X6 M Competition have been unveiled with a series of mid-life upgrades – including the addition of a mild-hybrid system in their V8 engines – ahead of the first Australian arrivals due between July and September 2023.
BMW’s facelifted X5 M Competition and X6 M Competition SUVs have received cosmetic and equipment updates in line with the refreshed ‘standard’ X5 and X6 models, revealed earlier this month.
Prices have risen by $14,000 for both models, with the X5 M Competition now priced from $241,900 plus on-road costs, while the X6 M Competition starts from $247,900.
On the outside, both BMW SUVs are now fitted with slimmer headlights and tail-lights compared to their predecessors, while gloss black trim features heavily around the grille, air vents, and lower front and rear bumpers.
The BMW X5 M and X6 M have been equipped with M Sport exhaust systems plus lightweight alloy wheels (21-inch at the front, 22-inch at the rear), with the X6 gaining an additional rear lip spoiler.
The biggest change inside the X5 M and X6 M is the new twin-screen curved dashboard panel, which includes a 12.3-inch digital instrument display and 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen, running the latest version of BMW’s iDrive operating system with cloud-based satellite navigation.
BMW’s updated infotainment system now includes 5G connectivity for the car’s embedded eSIM data connection, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and support for a digital smartphone-based key.
Under the bonnet, the BMW X5 M and X6 M’s 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine has undergone a significant update, with a new exhaust manifold, stronger crankshaft, more efficient turbochargers and a better oil system headlining the changes.
As with the ‘lesser’ X5 M60i xDrive and X6 M60i xDrive, the X5 M and X6 M are now fitted with a mild-hybrid system, which incorporates a 48-volt electric motor in their eight-speed automatic transmissions to deliver drive to all four wheels.
While BMW claims the mild-hybrid system boosts the engine’s mid-range power and torque by 9kW and 200Nm respectively, peak outputs from the engine – when the mild-hybrid system is not applying a boost – remain unchanged at 460kW and 750Nm.
The BMW X5 M also consumes more fuel than before on the European WLTP test cycle – up from 12.8-13.0L/100km to 12.9-13.1L/100km claimed – while the X6 M is unchanged with a quoted figure of 12.7-12.9L/100km.
BMW claims the new SUVs can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 3.9 seconds – one-tenth of a second slower than the current X6 M but unchanged from the existing X5 M.
The 2024 BMW X5 M Competition and X6 M Competition are due in Australia in the third quarter of 2023 (July to September).
