Volvo unveiled its new EX90 all-electric SUV, which is part of the Swedish manufacturer’s ambitious plan to reveal one new fully electric car each year. By 2030, Volvo aims to produce only fully electric vehicles and to be a climate-neutral company by 2040.
The all-wheel drive EX90 is powered by a 111kWh battery and two permanent magnet electric motors that produce 370 kW (496 hp) and 671 lb. ft. of torque in Performance mode. It’s expected to have a range of up to 300 miles and charge from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 30 minutes.
“The Volvo EX90 is a statement for where we are, and where we are going,” says Volvo chief executive, Jim Rowan. “It’s fully electric with a range of up to 300 miles on a single charge, designed to further raise our safety standards, the first Volvo car to be truly defined by its software and part of a wider ecosystem, connecting to your home and your other devices. The Volvo EX90 is the start of something new for Volvo Cars in many ways.”
Safety has always been a hallmark of Volvo, and the EX90 is no exception thanks to cameras, radars and lidar (light detection and ranging). Volvo’s lidar system can sense the road in front of the EX90 and see small objects hundreds of yards ahead to create greater time to inform the safety system and act accordingly. Volvo states that the EX90 can get smarter and safer as it learns from new data and updates.
Sensor and cameras can gauge the driver’s eye gaze concentration to determine if he or she is distracted, inattentive or drowsy, and will alert the driver accordingly. If the driver falls asleep or is incapacitated by a medical emergency, the EX90 is designed to stop safety and call for help.
The EX90 is produced with approximately 15 percent recycled steel, 25 percent recycled aluminum and over 105 pounds of recycled plastics and bio-based materials. The recycled plastic and bio-based material account for 15 percent of the total plastic used in the vehicle. It’s the first Volvo vehicle with bi-directional charging to use the car’s battery to power your home or other electric devices.
The seven-seat, all-electric SUV will be available well-equipped for under $80,000, with deliveries expected to begin in early 2024.
