Buyers are demanding more from their dual-cab utes and expect a spacious interior, as well as tub. We outline the top three offerings in the segment in terms of space.
Key to a dual-cab ute is its ability to serve a number of roles. Tradition remembers they were usually used on the worksite, but today more people are using them as everyday family cars for the 9 to 5, then doubling down on their capabilities for the weekend with adventure in mind.
Stands to reason, then, space is an important factor. Whether it’s the capacity of the tub or the legroom inside the interior, the size of a dual-cab ute could be a make-or-break factor in whether it’s the right option for your use case.
As part of our recent Dual-Cab Ute Megatest, Drive analysed myriad measurements relating to both interior space as well as tray capacity of eight dual-cab utes. We broke out the tape measure to assess the dimensions including elbow width, knee room and headroom in the front and rear of the cabin, plus tray measurements including tub length, width and height, along with the tailgate loading height. Some were longer in areas but shorter in others, and there were some clear winners in tub space and interior room overall.
Here are the top three most spacious utes in terms of interior space.
First: Ssangyong Musso
For space inside the cabin, the Ssangyong Musso also beats out all other dual-cab ute contenders. It’s the widest ute for elbow room with a substantial width, while it also scores well for headroom and legroom.
Second: Ford Ranger
Thanks to a low, scalloped seat, the Ford Ranger scores the best headroom of all dual-cabs, according to our tape measure at least. The width of the cabin is also among the best on test. Interestingly, legroom is among the best when the seats are in their furthest forward position, but becomes the worst when seats are brought all the way back.
Third: GWM Ute
Chinese challenger brands tend to offer value in terms of space, and the GWM puts a strong showing forward with the Ute Cannon X. It contains some of the best legroom of the bunch, where the headroom stands mid-pack. In any case, add all the measurements together and the GWM Ute scores third best of all dual-cab utes in terms of interior space.
