The 2023 Peugeot 308 range is due in Australian showrooms before the end of this year priced from $43,990 plus on-road costs – 50 per cent dearer than the cheapest version of the old model.

Available in four model grades across two body styles by early next year, the entry-level 308 GT hatch’s price compares to $30,499 plus on-road costs for the base version of the old 308, when it was last offered by Peugeot in 2021.

Until the flagship plug-in hybrid hatch arrives early next year – expected to cost in excess of $60,000 before on-road costs – the most expensive variant for now is the 308 GT Premium wagon, at $50,490 plus on-road costs.

While the new 308 range is more expensive, it comes with a significantly longer list of standard features across the range, packaged into a larger body.

The entry-level model is fitted with 18-inch wheels, matrix LED headlights, dual interior displays, part or full-leather upholstery, and a suite of advanced safety features as standard – some of which are new to the 308 nameplate.

Higher model grades add advanced lane centring technology, nappa leather seats, heated front seats with massaging, a premium sound system, surround-view camera, and a panoramic sunroof.

Three of the four models available – the first ones in showrooms – are powered by a 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine, sending 96kW and 230Nm to the front wheels through an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Due in the first half of 2023 is the 308 GT Sport Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) hatch, which combines a 132kW 1.6-litre turbo four-cylinder with an 81kW electric motor, 12.4kWh battery, eight-speed auto and front-wheel drive for outputs of 165kW and 360Nm.

Overseas, Peugeot claims up to 59km of electric driving range, and a 0-100km/h time of 7.5 seconds.

Pre-orders for the petrol-powered 2023 Peugeot 308 variants are open now through Peugeot dealers or its website, ahead of first deliveries before the end of 2022.

Customers can register their interest for the PHEV, ahead of first arrivals in the first half of next year.
