As the manual transmission is slowly getting phased out by the new generation of sophisticated, automatic transmissions, a few car manufacturers cling to the idea of driver involvement. While the dwindling demand for manual transmissions is one of the main reasons for many manufacturers to stop their offering, it is high-performance vehicles that are bringing the third pedal back. It seems there are enough driving enthusiasts out there for some car companies to keep the stick shift in production and even forego a quick-shifting automatic in its favor. Good examples are the manual-equipped V-12, Pagani Utopia, the neo-retro, Koenigsegg CC850, and the McLaren F1-inspired Gordon Murray T.50, all of which feature a third pedal and, in the case of Pagani and Koenigsegg, the fabled, gated shifter. But what does all that mean for the car industry?
