A fault in the Hyundai Nexo’s gas detection system may see the hydrogen-powered car fail to warn occupants of a leak.

Hyundai Australia has recalled 30 examples of its Hyundai Nexo, citing a fault with the hydrogen-powered car’s gas detection system.

While the recall notice covers Nexos built by Hyundai from 2018 until 2021, the car didn’t officially launch in Australia until last year – and industry data shows just 27 examples of the vehicle have been registered.

The recall notice, lodged with the Department of Infrastructure, says: “Due to a manufacturing defect, the hydrogen gas detection sensors may deteriorate over time. This may lead to a failure to detect gas leaks and illuminate the warning light to the operator/driver.

“In the event of a gas leak, failure to alert the operator/driver increases the risk of fire. This could cause serious injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users and bystanders, and/or damage to property.”
