An eclectic mix of automobiles is expected to cross auction blocks in the not-too-distant future after Australia’s Federal Police this week seized dozens of cars in a major drug bust.

As part of an ongoing investigation into drug importation, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) force has this week seized more than $5 million worth of assets suspected to be ‘proceeds of crime’.

Among the confiscated gold and silver bullion are 47 vehicles – including an eclectic collection of classic cars.

The AFP has released a number of images of the seizure where a warehouse is seen housing the cars, all neatly arranged and covered for protection.

While the images are general in nature (and no detailed list has been provided), we can spot a few collectible gems.

If the vehicles are deemed to be proceeds of crime, they will be auctioned or sold, with the AFP noting in a media statement: “The funds derived from the sale of confiscated assets are placed into the Confiscated Assets Account which is managed by the Australian Financial Security Authority on behalf of the Commonwealth.

“These funds can be distributed by the Attorney-General to benefit the community through crime prevention, intervention or diversion programs or other law enforcement initiatives across Australia.”

Alfa Romeo Brera (red and black)

Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the Alfa Romeo Brera was once described as the most beautiful car in the world, as it literally won the International Automobile Festival 2006 ‘Most Beautiful Car in the World’ award.

Mitsubishi Lancer (Celeste) coupe (yellow with a sombrero on the roof)

OK, so this one is more amusing than classic. The 1980-spec yellow paint and orange decals look to be in good condition though!

We can also see an orange Ford Capri, cream Volkswagen Beetle and a pair of Kombis, blue HX Holden Ute (potentially a Sandman as it sports black decals), a Fiat 850 and 128.

The raid was part of an ongoing investigation into drug importation. We’ll keep an eye out for these cars hitting the local auction market in the coming months.
