A Toyota Master Diagnostic Technician explains key maintenance items to ensure your journey to high mileage doesn’t involve Major Repairs and headaches.

So How to make your Toyota Last Over 300k Miles without major repairs? Well that’s a secret that Toyota owners don’t often share but it has a lot to do with maintenance and understanding why things are done the way they are!

In this video I will share with you some of the key maintenance items that are typically looked over which make owners wonder why their Toyota didn’t last as long as they’ve hoped for.

We’ll start with engine oil and the heavily debated 10k miles oil changes. I’ll explain why it’s important to change it by time as well.

Then we’ll move over to transmission fluid replacements which is another heavily debated subject. I’ll explain why replacing the transmission fluid too late is not good and equally replacing it too often is also not good.

I’ll also cover some additional fluid and component maintenance like the differential fluid, transfer case fluid, power steering fluid, brake fluid and spark plugs.

Lastly I will cover some general owner information.

I know it is not good, but…..how often do I change the fluids if I drive the car rarely (3 months of the year)?

I love my Camry 100 mph plus on cruise control 30 minutes and still get 40 mph average over 500 mile run.

My 2012 Prius V has 170k miles and never changed transmission fluid 🙁 Should I change it or leave it alone?

There is no amount of "debris" that is health for a transmission. Bearings, gears, seals and contact surfaces all work best with new, clean, uncontaminated fluid. Always.

And in the case of the 2016 rav4 Diesel engine, when must i change the oil? Thank you and keep the good work.

Very Informative, thank you. I have a Toyota Rav4, it has 27k on it. The first Oil change was at 7500 KM, the next was at 15k, the dealer said I don't need to change it that often, I have my yearly maintenance next month, it will be around 28K, Is it to late to get over 300K if change my oil at 7500-8000 KM starting now ?

I visited the Toyota service with my 270k km auris hybrit , 2013 to change transmission fluid. They told me they never do it , and since it is a closed system they dont suggest it. I told them what you suggest in this video to change the oil periodically, they said this is a life time oil. Do they really know what they say, or forcing me to default my transmission? What should I do?

    Howdy Car Care Nut,

So I’m regards to the brake and coolant fluids. I have PH strip tester for these fluids. It’s been 6 years and both are still in the more than good range per the ph charts. Should you say this is a good alternative to following just the time/mileage schedule?
