Polestar’s sleek O2 concept will make the journey to production in 2026, priced from about $US200,000 – and it’s coming to Australia.

Volvo’s electric-car spin-off Polestar plans to target the Tesla Roadster with the Polestar 6, now available to pre-order in all “active” Polestar markets – including Australia – ahead of a 2026 launch.

Interested Australians can now place down $US25,000 ($AU35,670) for a “build slot” for a special Polestar 6 LA Concept Edition launch version on Polestar’s website, only 500 examples of which will be built.

The launch edition is estimated to cost $US200,000 ($AU285,370) upon its 2026 launch – nearly four times Polestar’s most expensive car to date, the $AU73,400 plus on-road costs Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor sedan.

Underpinning the Polestar 6 is said to be the same UK-designed bonded aluminium platform being developed for the Polestar 5 sedan, due in 2024 – and all but locked in for an Australian launch.

The Polestar 6 will feature the same dual-motor, 800-volt mechanicals as the Polestar 5, developing up to 650kW and 900Nm, for a “targeted” 0-100km/h time of 3.2 seconds, and a 250km/h top speed.

The production Polestar 6 is slated to draw its styling from the O2 concept shown earlier this year, with a folding hard-top roof, sharp LED lights, and smooth surfacing.

Among the first cars off the production line in 2026 will be 500 examples of a special LA Concept Edition, named for the location (Los Angeles) where Polestar revealed the O2 concept in March.

This special edition will gain the ‘Sky’ blue exterior paint colour, light-coloured leather interior and distinctive 21-inch alloy wheels of the O2 concept, according to Polestar.

Further details of the 2026 Polestar 6 will be announced closer to launch, including exact launch timing, and full specifications.

Australian pricing is yet to be finalised, though Polestar has quoted an estimate for the United States of $US200,000. This converts to $AU285,000 as of writing in August 2022 – or $AU345,000 once Luxury Car Tax is added (at the current 2022-23 threshold).

“With the overwhelming consumer and press response, we took the decision to put this stunning roadster into production and I am so excited to make it a reality,” Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO, said in a media statement.

“Polestar 6 is a perfect combination of powerful electric performance and the thrill of fresh air with the top down.”

The Polestar 6 will be the electrified brand’s second two-door car, after the hybrid Polestar 1 – and the first convertible produced by Volvo or one of its brands (Volvo Cars owns 50 per cent of Polestar) since Volvo C70 production ended in 2013.
