Hyundai N’s first electric car has been spotted with less camouflage, showcasing its sporty look ahead of its launch next year or in 2024, likely priced from about $100,000.

The 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N – Hyundai N’s first electric car – has been spotted in less camouflage than ever before, ahead of its overseas launch sometime next year, and Australian launch to follow.

Past prototypes have been a mix of test ‘mules’ with standard Ioniq 5 bodywork, or heavily-disguised test cars with the correct sheet metal – but this car spied by Drive’s spy photography partners at Germany’s Nurburgring circuit wears a thin camouflage wrap and a few stick-on parts to confuse onlookers.

Visual upgrades for Hyundai N’s version of the Ioniq 5 include new front and rear bumpers, lower side skirts, wider wheel arches – without the indentations of the regular model – and a revised upper light bar with a central red stripe.

New 21-inch alloy wheels fill the arches – painted in black here, but expected to adopt a two-tone machined and black finish for production – wrapped in a set of Pirelli tyres, with red brake calipers behind.

The rear bumper is also new, while the dual-level spoiler atop the tailgate is closer in design to the i30 N hatch and Kona N than the smaller i20 N, integrated with the bodywork and featuring a triangular shape at its centre, likely for a third brake light.

The car’s dashboard isn’t clearly visible, though the N sports bucket seats from the i30 N do feature, likely with illuminated N logos in the headrests.

Few mechanical details of the Ioniq 5 N have surfaced, however expect a variation of the related Kia EV6 GT’s powertrain, which uses two electric motors and a 77.4kWh battery pack to develop 430kW and 740Nm combined, or about 200kW more than a standard Ioniq 5 all-wheel drive.

The result is a 3.5-second 0-100km/h time in the Kia – though the lighter Hyundai is likely to go even quicker – and a 260km/h top speed. Driving range is rated at about 450km to 500km in the EV6 GT.

Expect the Ioniq 5 N to benefit from the EV6 GT’s box of performance parts, including an electronic limited-slip rear differential, adaptive suspension, larger performance brakes, and unique steering and handling tuning, likely in Germany and in Australia.

The 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is due to be revealed overseas sometime next year, ahead of an Australian launch in 2024, priced from around $100,000.
