The unique-looking Alfa Romeo Giulia was seen at the Concource d’Elegance, Poltu Quatu Classic in Sardegna, Italy. The Italian sedan is finished in the proper shade of Rosso (red), but more importantly, it now features the front end of the 1962 Alfa Giulia. The original sedan was manufactured between 1962 and 1978, and the modern version pays tribute with an ala-1960s, quad-headlight front end, which sits surprisingly well with the car’s curved forms.
The bespoke body kit is accompanied by classic-inspired wheels, just like the classic Giulia and Junior models. The front wings culminate into massive air extractors while the side skirts seem to have retained the original design, incorporating an elegant carbon-fiber strip. Sometimes, too much retro is not a good idea and the rear end of the modified Giulia is a good example. The new design features way too many crests and edges, to the point where you are unsure what they were trying to do.
The two spoilers – one on the trunk and one on the roof – seem to abide by the form-over-function philosophy. The taillights seem to be inspired by the Alfa Romeo Junior, but together with the boxy end, it looks more like an Alfa Romeo 75, which is technically the new Giulia’s predecessor. Probably, the cleanest design element here is the rear diffuser with a centrally-positioned, dual-exhaust that looks like the one on the Giulia GTAm. We will say, however, that from some angles, it reminds us of the Alfa Romeo 156 Superturismo racecar.
Unfortunately, there isn’t much information about the body kit or who made it. It certainly isn’t one of the bigger design houses, like Carrozzeria Touring, which is responsible for the Disco Volante, as the design simply lacks consistency. With that said, the mysterious Alfa Romeo Giulia gives us an insight into what a modern, Italian sports sedan with a retro-futuristic design could look like, even though the retro design trend seems to be going away. But should it make a comeback?
