An auction is underway for the old Broadbeach Monorail system, which is similar to those seen in Brockway, Ogdenville and North Haverbrook…

We know this isn’t a car, but we simply couldn’t resist.

Offered at auction by Lloyds Auctioneers, is the defunct Oasis Monorail which used to run a 1.3km circuit between the Oasis shopping center and Jupiter’s Casino in Broadbeach on the Gold Coast.

On offer are two entire four-car trains plus a spare passenger car. And for clarity, mono means one, and rail means rail.

The ‘Goldcoaster’ monorail (which is still visible on the Google Maps satellite view of Broadbeach) was installed in 1989 and ran for 28 years before being shut down in 2017.

However, political and council barriers prevented this, and a ground-based light rail system was installed instead. Apparently, it was considered a ‘thing’ to climb up and walk along the elevated track after a few drinks, much to the emergency services and operator’s frustration.

While no track is included in the auction, we’re sure the successful bidder’s local community could contact a savvy salesman from an organisation like the Lanley Institute to assist with construction and implementation.

The cars have been sitting in storage for quite some time and aren’t in great shape. They are likely home to a family of possums.

The last operational monorail in Australia, the 2km loop around Sea World resort on the Gold Coast, has not officially been closed but the train has been inoperative since early 2020, with the cars and carriages removed and sent away for scrapping this month.
