The new Honda CR-V will undergo a growth spurt when it’s revealed in the coming months, backed by more conservative looks and a hybrid powertrain.

The next-generation 2023 Honda CR-V family SUV has been teased, ahead of its full reveal in the coming months – and a likely Australian launch late this year, or sometime next year.
As outed in leaked images and patent renderings in recent months, the new CR-V will trade its predecessor’s sharper look for a more conservative design, with slim new LED headlights, and smooth surfacing similar to Honda’s new Civic small car.
While the new teasers reveal little new, they showcase vertical LED tail-lights not unlike those of a modern Volvo, a sporty front valence with metallic accents, and in a nod to the original 1990s CR-V, an ‘AWD’ badge printed on the rear window glass.
The teasers affirm leaked photos out of China last week, revealing the new SUV’s design in full – plus patent images published online earlier in 2022.
According to leaked Chinese specifications, the new CR-V will measure 4703mm long, 1866mm wide and 1690mm high, on a 2700mm wheelbase – about 65mm longer, 10mm wider and 10mm taller than its predecessor, with 40mm more between the wheels.
Five or seven seats will continue to be available, depending on variant.
The growth spurt will position the Honda as one of the largest in the medium SUV segment – and bordering on the large SUV class – alongside the Mitsubishi Outlander, Skoda Kodiaq and Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace.
As confirmed in the latest teaser, the new CR-V will be available with a hybrid powertrain – promised to be “more advanced” than the current CR-V Hybrid sold overseas, which develops 158kW/315Nm from a 2.0-litre petrol engine and electric motor.
Meanwhile, a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine will remain available, with outputs of approximately 140kW and 240Nm, and a choice of front- or all-wheel drive.
The 2023 Honda CR-V is slated to be revealed in full in the northern summer of 2022 (June to August). Australian launch timing is yet to be confirmed, though first local arrivals early next year seem probable.
