Lotus recently unveiled its very first electric crossover, the Eletre. Despite being a crossover, it actually holds true to some of the ideals that make Lotus the brand it is today. It’s capable of hitting 60 mph in 2.95 seconds, has a top speed of 161 mph, and it even has a decent range of around 600 km or 372 miles. During its reveal, though, Lotus intentionally avoided one subject, and that was weight. It’s not surprising as the Eletre is now the heaviest vehicle in Lotus history, with Lotus engineers “aiming for” a curb weight of 2,000 kg or 4,409 pounds. This doesn’t not factor into the ideals that make a Lotus a Lotus, though, and neither does the body style, so what gives? Well, I’m here to tell you that the Lotus Eletre is quite literally necessary for the brand’s survival.
