Starting today, the 2022 Federal Budget has promised a 50 per cent cut to the national fuel excise – so when will you see a benefit?
While this is a welcome relief for many motorists, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg, noted that this change would roll out to national bowsers over the next two weeks, which, considering this is a computerised pricing change and not a physical extraction of cents from litres of fuel, feels a little generous.
The Drive team has been out and about today to see if any petrol stations have implemented the cut, and the result is varied, to say the least.
South of Sydney, Justin noted an Ampol station where 91-octane unleaded was well under the $2.00 mark, and 98-octane was less than what many have paid for regular in the past few weeks. Win!
Melbourne too saw some drops, with Bailey reporting a drop at a Liberty Independent and 7-Eleven Mobil in the city’s west.
However, back in New South Wales, Sam noted one Ampol station had a big variance to another with petrol and diesel out of sync in terms of pricing.
Just south of the city, Ted saw prices still high at one BP, but then low at another, basically underscoring that you need to shop around.
As noted, fuel suppliers do have a bit of time to reflect the change, and they have been told the ACCC will ensure they do, but as for immediate hip-pocket impact, you’ll need to keep an eye out for good prices near you.
