I second your point on the black ice. If the weather is below 40 F, look out. The ground can be colder than ambient temperatures, leading to a dangerous situation, especially if you’re not expecting it.
As someone who commuted in the Boston winter for 3 years, I’m never doing extreme cold weather riding again.
Try riding in 40 or 50 degrees ….
I live by myself. That said, my bike might just be living INSIDE in the living room next to the front door for a while. Heh heh!

Get a car….LOL Layers are good, but I remember a long summer tour I took when I wore a mesh jacket and a sweater. It was all good until I got to the coast of Oregon. I was frozen, Now, I live here and wear Aerostich AD 1 pants and Olympia jacket with a rain and quilted layer. I can put on an electric jacket and Hippo Hands on my grips. Superb! Great video!

The most you feel unconfortable, the most you leak in concentration and increase the probabilities to have an accident, so, better to spend a bit more on gear 😉
