The Pick of the Day is a two-owner 1962 Mercedes-Benz 220 SE coupe with a link to legendary singer Johnny Cash. According to the car’s advertisement on ClassicCars.com, the second owner and private seller of the car is the manager of The Tennessee Three, Cash’s band throughout his career.
And thus the “Cash” decal on the car’s left-rear flank.
According to the advertisement, this Mercedes has been driven 108,000 miles since new and has been a driven “survivor” used for trips back and forth to the airport.
“Rust free, survivor class W111 coupe, all original, never restored,” the seller reports, adding that the car has never sat unused or in storage.
The seller adds that the first owner was a fine-art photographer in Northern California. The car currently is in Portland, Oregon.
“Excellent oil pressure, stack of 25 receipts shows nearly $20,000 spent over 6-years for parts and service from the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center and local independent Mercedes shops,” the seller reports. “Engine head rebuilt at 100k miles along with other work totaling $9,615 for that service alone!
“Lots of mechanical work has been completed to bring this car to a state where it’s very reliable and drivable, yet the cosmetics were left untouched to maintain originality. Always the center of attention at shows owing to its elegant lines and tasteful patina. It’s the perfect car for daily driving, timed rally use, or touring where you don’t want to worry about adding a scratch but where reliability remains paramount.
“Excellent base for rally-type vehicle such as Peking to Paris. Great around town, but comes into her own around 80-90 mph on the open road. Perfect long-distance cruiser.”
The seller points out and includes photographs of areas in need of cosmetic care.
“Areas that exhibit the car’s age include a chip in the far passenger side of windshield (out of sight lines), seat leather needs replaced, small dings throughout the body and bumpers, the fuel gauge flops around below about 1/4 tank, and the paint has been touched up in various sections over the years. The car is solid and there are NO patch panels; all original body… All chassis, body, engine, and frame numbers/tags are present.”
The car comes with original California Black Plates, tool roll, jack and spare tire, owner’s manual, and more.
The advertisement includes a long list of parts that have been repaired or replace in recent years.
