2021 Munich motor show: Every production and concept car debut

It goes without saying the COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc on the international motor show scene, with the first show to get the axe in 2020 being Geneva in March – meaning it’s been nearly two years since the last major European show, in Frankfurt in late 2019.

The 2021 Munich motor show in September will mark a return – and represents the first time the industry’s September/October biannual European show has been held in Munich, after nearly 70 years at the Messe Frankfurt, in the city of the same name.

As the days until the show commences count down – with doors to remain open from 7-12 September, following a media day on 6 September – increasing numbers of manufacturers are announcing their plans for the Munich event, with a slew of new models to be displayed.

Here’s every new car making its global public debut in Munich – which have not been shown at prior motor shows or automotive events, such as Shanghai in April, the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July, or Pebble Beach in August.

• Audi RS3 (revealed) – new hyper hatch and sedan rival for the Mercedes-AMG A45 S, due in Australia in 2022.
• Audi Q4 E-Tron (revealed) – small to mid-size electric SUV slotting between the Q3 and Q5.
• BMW X3/X4 facelift, including M models (Australian pricing) – updated mid-size SUV twins, due in Australia in late 2021
• BMW iX3 facelift (Australian pricing) – updated mid-size electric SUV, here in late 2021
• BMW iX5 Hydrogen (confirmed) – hydrogen fuel-cell SUV to conduct demo runs, ahead of limited production in 2022
• Cupra Born (Australian details) – an electric hot hatch based on the Volkswagen ID.3, possibly bound for Australia
• Dacia seven-seater (confirmed) – likely a new version of the brand’s Lodgy people mover, but unlikely for Australia
• Mercedes-AMG plug-in hybrid (September 1 reveal confirmed) – slated to be a 500kW hybrid version of the GT 4-Door Coupe
• Mercedes-AMG electric vehicle (September 5 reveal confirmed) – slated to be a 560kW dual-motor version of the EQS sedan

• Mercedes-Benz C-Class All-Terrain (revealed) – high-riding version of new C-Class wagon, but not coming to Australia
• Mercedes-Benz EQE (teased, September 5 reveal confirmed) – smaller companion to flagship EQS electric limo
• Mercedes-Benz S-Class Guard (revealed)
• Porsche Macan facelift (Australian pricing) – second facelift for mid-size SUV, to be sold alongside upcoming electric model
• Renault Megane E-Tech Electric (teased) – small electric SUV on dedicated platform to wear well-known nameplate
• Volkswagen ID.4 GTX (revealed) – performance SUV on sale in Europe, but Munich will be its first motor show appearance
• Volkswagen ID.5 GTX (confirmed) – thinly-camouflaged prototype to preview electric coupe SUV due later in 2021
• Volkswagen Polo, including GTI (revealed) (GTI revealed) – updated city car due in Australia in 2022
• Volkswagen Taigo (revealed) – T-Cross-based coupe SUV not coming for Australia
