Genesis’ first dedicated electric SUV has debuted, with concept-inspired styling and camera side mirrors.
The first official photos of the new 2022 Genesis GV60 electric SUV, ahead of full details likely due within weeks, and an Australian launch in the first half of 2022.
Based on the same ‘E-GMP’ dedicated electric architecture as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6, the GV60’s model designation is said to represent the model’s “athleticism”, rather than its size and position in the Genesis range – though prototype sightings suggest it will be a small or mid-size SUV once reaching Australia.
Loosely inspired by the Mint concept of 2019, the GV60’s styling is more radical than the larger GV70 and GV80, though it retains the brand’s signature ‘Quad Lamps’ lighting signature and ‘crest’ front grille, albeit placed lower down on the front end than Genesis’ larger cars, given an electric car’s reduced cooling demands.
A rising beltline leads to the rear, where a sloping tailgate with Mint-inspired tail-lights and an integrated rear spoiler feature.
The GV60 is the first Genesis model to feature digital side mirrors, where traditional mirrors are replaced by cameras projecting a feed onto to displays inside the cabin. It’s possible traditional mirrors will be offered as standard in Australia, with the cameras as an option.
Inside, the camera feeds are joined by two large circa-12-inch displays for infotainment and instrumentation, tucked behind a two-spoke steering wheel featuring a ‘Boost’ button, likely to activate a short burst of maximum power from the car’s electric motors for performance driving.
The floating centre console includes a new ‘Crystal Sphere’ gear selector – design themes from which are carried over to other elements of the interior, including the door handles and mirror controls.
Details of the GV60’s powertrains are yet to be confirmed, however leaked information published by The Korean Car Blog indicates three variants will be offered in South Korea.
Entry-level models offer 168kW and rear-wheel drive, the mid-spec ‘Long Range AWD’ features 239kW and all-wheel drive, while the flagship ‘Performance’ has 321kW, all-wheel drive and 21-inch alloy wheels.
Further details of the 2022 Genesis GV60 electric SUV are expected to be announced in the coming weeks, ahead of first Australian deliveries in the first half of 2022.
