A new record has been set for a 1986 Toyota LandCruiser 60 Series – selling for 30 per cent more than a range-topping 300 Series.
A 1986 Toyota LandCruiser 60 Series has sold at auction over the weekend for a record-breaking $US134,400 – or roughly $183,000 in Australian money.
The Toyota was included as part of the Pebble Beach Auction held by Gooding & Company, where the LandCruiser was offered alongside the likes of a Ferrari F40 and McLaren F1.
It’s believed the result is the highest ever paid for a LandCruiser 60 Series, with the next-highest previously selling for $US80,000 ($109,000).
The hammer price is a 68 per cent increase over the previous record, and was 50 per cent more than the auctioneer’s highest estimate for the lot.
The olive-on-brown-vinyl 60 Series received a two-year frame-off restoration by The FJ Company – a business that specialises in rebuilding older LandCruisers. The FJ Company has a long waiting list, despite its restoration jobs costing hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Under the bonnet of the 1986 LandCruiser is a petrol 4.0-litre straight-six engine, mated to a four-speed automatic transmission and part-time four-wheel drive. When it was new, outputs were listed as 110kW and 284Nm.
While the recently-unveiled LandCruiser 300 Series won’t be sold in the United States, the 1986 model’s final sale price is roughly $44,000 more expensive than the range-topping LandCruiser Sahara ZX in Australia.
According to auction tracking website Classic.com, a total of ten LandCruiser 60 Series models have sold for between $US70,000 and $US80,000 ($AU95,000-$109,000) since March 2020.
The record result comes just two months after a 1994 Toyota LandCruiser 80 Series sold on US auction website Bring-a-Trailer for $US136,000 ($AU185,000).
Closer to home, exotic car dealership Lorbek currently has a single-cab 1989 Toyota LandCruiser 75 Series listed for sale for $52,100 before on-road costs.
