Vintage Ford Broncos have become so popular — and expensive — of late that if you have one, you’re in jeopardy of seeing yourself coming and going whether you’re on or off pavement.
If you want to stand out from the Bronco herd, consider the Pick of the Day, a 1978 International Harvester Scout II Traveler being offered for sale on ClassicCars.com by a dealership in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Scout II was launched for the 1971 model year as the successor to the original Scout, introduced in 1961 as a compact 4×4 utility vehicle. For the 1971 model year, the Scout II was available in four body styles — Traveler, Traveltop, Terra Pickup and SSII. The Pick of the Day is a restored Traveler done in Lunar Rock Gray with a period-correct graphics package and full black soft top, the dealer notes.

The dealer adds that this Traveler has GRC custom front and rear bumpers, SSII grille, and 33-inch tires on 17-inch alloy wheels with locking hubs for 4×4 travel. It is equipped with power steering and power brakes (discs up front).
The engine is a 345cid V8 with FiTech fuel injection and the gearbox is a 4-speed manual. The 345 was an optional powerplant, and this one has been rebuilt. The dealer notes that the use of fuel injection makes it easy to start, provides “excellent throttle response and makes good power throughout the rev range.”
Of 23,610 Scout II models for the 1971 year, 21,192 were equipped with either a 304 or 345 V8 rather than the standard 196 4-cylinder or optional 198cid Nissan diesel.
“Flowmaster dual exhaust helps it breathe and delivers a throaty exhaust note. Driveline, suspension, steering and brakes have been fully overhauled with rebuilt axles, full brake job including new lines, new front locking hubs, and more.”
The odometer shows 18,737 miles, presumably the travel since the restoration.
“Interior is tastefully finished with GTI plaid upholstery on the seats with matching door panels,” the dealer points out. “Modern AM/FM stereo with Bluetooth, USB and aux input. Wood steering wheel. Roll bar with three-point seat belts for both the front and rear occupants. All interior and exterior lighting had been upgraded to LED. Interior floors have been rhino lined for all-weather durability.”
The dealer adds that this is the long-wheelbase version of the Scout II, extended 18 inches in the rear.
