The Toyota HiLux has been updated for 2022, with Australia’s top-selling ute getting new anti-theft tracking technology.

Pricing and specifications for the 2022 Toyota HiLux ute have been announced, with prices rising across the range from between $635 and $1210.

Australia’s most popular new vehicle has been updated for the new year, with the HiLux gaining a lower-profile sharkfin-style antenna to link to Toyota Connected Services, which has the ability to call emergency services after an accident and track the vehicle if it’s been stolen.

While prices have been increased by between $635 and $760 across most variants, the flagship HiLux Rugged X is now $1210 more – less than a year after Toyota increased prices for the Rugged X by nearly 10 per cent.

There are 33 versions of the HiLux available, thanks to five different body styles, three engines, two transmissions, and the choice of either rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive.

Entry-level HiLux Workmate variants are powered by either a 2.4-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine offering 110kW and 400Nm, or a 2.7-litre petrol non-turbo four-cylinder producing 122kW and 245Nm.

Those who step up to the HiLux SR, SR5, Rogue, or range-topping Rugged X get the 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine, with 150kW and 500Nm – shared with the Toyota Fortuner and LandCruiser Prado.

Depending on the variant, Toyota claims fuel economy for the 2.4-litre turbo-diesel of between 7.4 litres and 8.0 litres per 100 kilometres, while the 2.7-litre petrol engine is listed at 7.1-8.0L/100km. The 2.8-litre turbo-diesel is claimed at 7.1-8.1L/100km. Fuel capacity is 80 litres across the board.

While the petrol engine makes do with a five-speed manual or six-speed auto, diesel engines can be had with either a six-speed manual or six-speed auto – with the auto standard on Rogue and Rugged X models.

Buyers have the option of rear-wheel drive for all engines, or switchable dual-range four-wheel drive for either diesel powertrain.

Braked towing capacity is listed as 2500kg for petrol variants, 2800kg for 4×2 diesels, and 3500kg across all 4×4 models.

Wheel sizes vary from between 16 and 18 inches, and buyers can opt for premium paint for an additional $675.

The 2022 Toyota HiLux range is on sale now, and all vehicles come with a five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty.
