To celebrate its 20th anniversary of the Trans Am in 1989, Pontiac built a special-edition, all-white model named, you guessed it, the 20th Anniversary Trans Am. This car was chosen as the official pace car for the 73rd Indianapolis 500 Race on May 28, 1989.
Pontiac made only 1,555 of these Trans Ams and AutoHunter, the online auction platform driven by ClassicCars.com, has one up for bidding.
This 1989 Pontiac Firebird Tans Am Turbo Indy Pace Car Edition is dressed in official pace car livery and features removable glass T-tops, a factory-installed featured shared by only 1,324 of the 20th Anniversary Trans Ams.
Other exterior features include fog lamps, a full-width taillight panel, stainless-steel dual exhaust outlets and a fiberglass rear spoiler.
The interior houses Camel leather, four-way manually adjustable bucket seats and contrasting black dash and center console. Amenities include air conditioning, power windows, door map pockets, reading lamps a Delco AM/FM cassette stereo and an aftermarket keyless entry system.
Power comes from a rebuilt turbocharged 3.8-liter V6 factory rated at 250 horsepower and reworked with JE pistons, a Crane roller cam, moly rings, Manley valves, a Turbo Tweak adjustable chip and other performance upgrades.
“Like the engine, the 4-speed automatic transmission has been rebuilt with a shift kit and it is paired with a limited-slip differential,” AutoHunter says in the car’s listing.
The odometer reads 71,624, which the seller notes is true.
This Trans Am’s auction ends August 18 at 12:20 p.m. PDT.
