One result of the coronavirus pandemic and the shelter-at-home orders is an outburst of participation at events this year. For example, Carlisle Events has reported near or record numbers for its shows this year and this past weekend broke the record again with 2,926 vehicles — cars, trucks and vans — on display at the Carlisle Chrysler Nationals.
In addition, the company reported a sold-out status for vendor space in the swap meet area.
Although scheduled for three days, the weekend started early with the Mopar Rebellion kickoff party on Thursday.
“That get together was the perfect jumping off point for what would end up being three full days of energy, parts shopping and unmatched camaraderie,” according to the Carlisle Events news release. “Once the sun rose on the Carlisle PA Fairgrounds July 9 through the final load-out on Sunday, the place was hopping with special displays, vendors, guests and special attractions.”
Featured this year were Demons, 50-years of 1971 Mopars, Old Skool Paint, and Dirty ‘Birds. Forward Look vehicles also were featured in a display that included designers Gordon Davis and Diran Yazejian.
Other Chrysler personalities included Herb McCandless, Ramchargers Joe Zolper and David Rea, and the Golden Commandos. The weekend also marked the world premier of the documentary Mr. 4 Speed about McCandless’s career.
Among the vehicles on display were a salvaged 1971 Road Runner rebuilt after Hurricane Katrina, another ’71 Road Runner driven to the show with no air conditioning or power steering but with a big Warner Brothers Road Runner protruding from the hood.
Next up for Carlisle and its fairgrounds fields is the Carlisle Truck Nationals, scheduled for August 6-8.
