Back in the 1960s, Ford asked Carroll Shelby to turn a secretary’s car into a racing machine and the result was the Shelby GT350 Mustang. But with the introduction of the electric-powered Mustang Mach-E crossover vehicle, Ford isn’t waiting for Shelby or anyone else to bump up the performance.

Instead, Ford has unveiled what it calls “Unbridled Extend” for its Mach-E GT and Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition, “a track- and closed-course-only mode extension for more performance-oriented traction and stability control – including a revamped interior sound.”

The package includes MagneRide suspension, Ford Performance front seats with copper metallic stitching, B&O Sound System by Bang & Olufsen with nine speakers and subwoofer, and a “unique illuminated pony badge.” Customers can order the cars online or at a Ford EV-certified dealer beginning April 28, the automaker said.

“With Mustang Mach-E GT and Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition, we’re pushing the boundaries of what an electric vehicle can offer,” Dave Pericak, the vehicle program director, is quoted in Ford’s announcement. “These Mustang Mach-E models not only give customers the added capability expected from the GT name, but the responsiveness of their electric powertrains will ensure they have a thrilling experience behind the wheel.”

The Mach-E GT comes with all-wheel drive — a secondary electric motor powering the front wheels — with 480 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque. Ford says the car will hit 60 mph in 3.8 seconds.

The vehicle rides on 20-inch aluminum wheels with Continental all-season tires and red-painted brake calipers.

The Mach-E GT Performance Edition has the same horsepower but 634 pound-feet of torque, and gets larger brake rotors and high-performance Pirelli tires.

In addition, the E GT and GT Performance Edition can be equipped with Co-Pilot365 Active 2.0, Ford’s BlueCruise system for “hands-free highway driving.”

The Mach-E GT starts at $59,900 and Mach-E GT Performance Edition at $64,900. For more information, visit the Ford website.
