A joint announcement will be coming next month from Toyota and Subaru, with the GR 86 expected to be launched.

Above and top: Renders from CarAdvice artist Theophilus Chin speculating on what the new GR 86 may look like.

According to a statement from Toyota, Gazoo Racing president Koji Sato will take part in the upcoming event, all but confirming earlier reports the new-generation 86 would feature the brand’s performance-focused ‘GR’ badging. This will place the car in elite company, alongside the GR Supra and GR Yaris in Australia.

Spokespeople for both brands in Australia were unable to comment or provide further details for the upcoming announcement, however confirmed more information would be shared locally in the coming weeks.

The twin-under-the-skin Subaru BRZ (shown below) was revealed in November 2020, with a 2.4-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder boxer engine delivering 170kW/249Nm to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission or six-speed torque-converter automatic.
