2021 Subaru Outback price and specs

Initial Australian pricing and specifications for the 2021 Subaru Outback have been released, ahead of the model’s local launch in March.

The new-generation model – the first all-new Outback in six years – will arrive in the coming months with a choice of three variants, priced between $39,990 and $47,790 plus on-road costs.

All models are powered by a “90 per cent new” 2.5-litre, naturally-aspirated, horizontally-opposed four-cylinder petrol engine, developing 138kW of power and 245Nm of torque (up 9kW/10Nm).

The six-cylinder petrol and four-cylinder turbo-diesel options offered with the outgoing model have been axed, while the 194kW/375Nm 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine offered in the US is off-limits for Australia.

All-wheel-drive is standard-fit on all models, as is a CVT automatic transmission with an available “eight-speed” manual mode. Subaru claims a braked towing capacity of 2000kg.

Opening the range is the eponymous ‘Outback AWD‘, priced from $39,990 plus on-road costs – up $2550 over the outgoing, entry-level Outback.

While full Australian specifications will be confirmed closer to launch, Subaru has confirmed standard equipment on the ‘base’ Outback will be headlined by an 11.6-inch portrait infotainment touchscreen, auto start-stop and a wide array of safety technologies, including autonomous emergency braking, available in both forward and reverse, and offering support for intersections.

Other standard safety technologies include lane-keep assist, lane-centering assist, lane-departure warning, lane change assist, driver attention monitoring, evasive steering assist, speed sign recognition (with a speed limiter), blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

Also on offer is a new passenger seat cushion airbag, which in the event of a frontal crash pushes up on the front section of the seat base, preventing the front passenger’s waist from moving forward or sliding beneath the seatbelt.

Positioned above the entry-level grade is the Outback AWD Sport, priced from $44,490 plus on-road costs.

The mid-spec variant adds “water-repellent” sports seat trim, heated front and rear outboard seats, front and side parking cameras (projecting a camera feed from the front bumpers and side mirrors respectively), hands-free power-operated tailgate with a memory function and satellite navigation.

Other additional features over the base Outback AWD include black exterior accents (exclusive to the Sport), roof rails with green accents and a dark metallic finish for the alloy wheels (of unknown diameter).

Sitting atop the Australian range is the flagship Outback AWD Touring, priced from $47,790 plus on-road costs.

Additional equipment over the Sport includes nappa leather-accented seat trim, a heated steering wheel, power-operated sunroof, a nine-speaker Harman/Kardon sound system with subwoofer, amplifier and CD player, gloss alloy wheel finish and silver roof rails with integrated, stowable cross bars.
