The new mid-engine Corvette ‘Zora’ will be badged Stingray at the bottom end of the range, with more powerful variants to follow after launch.

Alex Misoyannis • Chevrolet has confirmed the eighth-generation C8 Corvette, set for a Friday reveal, will launch in ‘Stingray’ guise.

The moniker was first used on the second-generation Corvette in 1963, before being dropped at the end of 1976. It made a return in 2014 to denote the entry-level variant of the C7 Corvette – the same role it’ll fill within the new C8 range.

The 2020 Stingray is set to be powered by an updated version of the current model’s 6.2-litre LT1 V8, boosted to around 500hp (373kW).

In a significant break from tradition, the engine is expected to be mid-mounted, and drive the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

More potent versions badged Z06, ZR1 and Zora, are expected to arrive later, complete with power from new turbocharged dual-overhead-cam V8 engines and plug-in hybrid systems.

The 2020 Chevrolet Corvette will make its public debut in California this Friday. A livestream of the reveal event will commence at 12:30pm Melbourne and Sydney time.
