Domestic market gets new 2.2L oiler at the top of the range, though it’s unclear whether it’ll make its way to Oz.

Mitsubishi Motors Japan has detailed a new addition to its Eclipse Cross line-up, the top-spec ‘G Plus Package’ which now gets a diesel engine option.

Set to go on sale in the domestic market from June 13, the new ‘Clean Diesel’ is a 2.2-litre turbocharged unit making 107kW at 3500rpm, and 380Nm at 2000rpm.

It’s worth noting the diesel engine has been available in other overseas markets since the model’s launch, though it’s the first time it’s been available in Japan, which is where Australian models are sourced from.

Drive is sent to an on-demand all-wheel drive system via an eight-speed torque converter automatic with sport mode. Fuel efficiency is rated at 14.2km/L on the combined WLTC cycle, which works out to around 7.0L/100km.

Helping reduce emissions is a urea SCR exhaust system, which “allows for reduced exhaust emissions from the turbocharged diesel engine by breaking down and removing nitrogen oxides (NOx) from the exhaust gas” using AdBlue Urea water additives.

Being based on the G Plus Package specification, standard equipment includes LED headlights, 18-inch alloys, a floating tablet-tyle 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a head-up display, and electric park brake.

Pricing in Japan kicks off from ¥3,403,080 ($45,531), with sales commencing on June 13.

Australia

has contacted Mitsubishi’s local division regarding prospects for the new Eclipse Cross diesel Down Under, and is awaiting a response.

Back in November 2017, shortly before the Eclipse Cross was launched, the company’s head of product planning, James Tol, said a diesel option was unlikely for Australia.

“Now we’ve got this small capacity turbo-petrol, with high efficiency and really good performance, it didn’t seem a lot of point to putting the diesel into the range,” he said of the current 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine.
