Over 2000 coupes called back to dealers over concerns of cracked control arms that could cause loss of steering control.
Mazda Australia has issued a recall for the 2003 and 2004 model-year RX-8 rotary sports car over concerns of a cracked lower control arm.
The Japanese brand reports affected vehicles could have ball joint casings in the front lower control arm that could crack over time, due to “an inappropriate production process”.
“Under high load conditions, the ball joint casing may break, which may cause the ball joint to detach from the lower arm,” the company says in the recall notice.
If the condition occurs, Mazda says this can result in a loss of steering control, increasing the risk of an accident.
There are 2006 units affected by this recall, sold from 10 July 2003 to 28 April 2005 – a VIN list is attached here.
Owners of the affected RX-8 models will be contacted by Mazda Australia, and are advised to present their vehicle to their local dealer to have the front lower control arm replaced at no charge.
