Well well well, look what we have here. If it isn’t the mid-engined Corvette, wearing less camouflage than ever before.

The next-generation ‘C8’ Chevrolet Corvette has been spied at the Nurburgring, wearing less camouflage to show off its new mid-engined shape.

Up front, the headlights and ankle-breaking splitter share their basic DNA with those of the current Corvette ZR1, although the snub-nosed profile and air intakes on the rear flanks are dead giveaways as to where the engine is hiding.

The tail-lights also appear to take a similar shape to those of the current car, sitting below a low-profile rear spoiler and surprisingly subtle quad exhaust pipes. They’re spread across the diffuser, instead of centrally-mounted like the current car’s setup.

What we really want to see, the engine, is hidden away under a black plastic cover at the moment. We’d suggest a glass cover of some sort will feature on the production car, given it’s the beating heart of the whole Corvette experience.

Recent patents from General Motors have put fairly drastic active aerodynamics on the table, too, although the filings related to a front-engined car.

As for what that beating heart will be? Rumours suggest it’ll be offered with a range of V8 engines, ranging in output from around 340kW to somewhere in the vicinity of 630kW. There’s also talk about a hybrid, although what form it’ll take – or if in fact it’s real – remains to be seen.

There’s no firm word on when the new Corvette will touch down, but scuttlebutt puts a late-2019 launch firmly on the radar. Stay tuned for more on what shapes as one of the most exciting cars to roll forth from Chevrolet in the lead up to its unveiling.
